You know you’re a big time celebrity when you can turn down the lead role in what’s sure to be a major blockbuster and not even bat an eye.

The iconic role of Alice in Tim Burton’s remake of Alice in Wonderland is undoubtedly one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood (and was handed to newcomer Mia Wasikowska), but for Anne Hathaway, it just didn’t do it for her. She tells British GQ magazine, “The studio had the Alice script a long time ago and I was approached back then for the part of Alice. I considered it, but felt, what with The Princess Diaries, that I had been there, done that sort of pretty-girl-in-a-fairy-dress role.”

Instead, the Devil Wears Prada actress opted for the role of the White Queen and convinced director Tim Burton of her vision for the role. “I talked on the phone with Tim and he really liked my take. I wanted the Queen to be a cross between Debbie Harry, Greta Garbo, David Bowie, with (a) little bit of the work of Dan Flavin thrown in for good measure.”

Anne has actively tried to move away from her innocent, good girl image starring in such dramas as Brokeback Mountain and Rachel Getting Married. Her latest role, though more theatrical than serious is a definite contrast from her turn as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries movies.

But the 27-year-old is excited for the release of the new Alice in Wonderland and what audiences will think of Tim’s unique take on the classic story. “I’m not sure how much I’m supposed to tell you but no one’s given me my marching orders as yet. It’s not exactly Alice in Wonderland, nor Through The Looking Glass. Tim has Alice come back to Wonderland – but ten years later.”

Anne Hathaway’s on-screen love interests have included Adrien Grenier, Jake Gyllenhaal and James McAvoy, so it’s no wonder the actress could teach a class about movie kissing.

“You have to leave your mouth open a little bit,” she explained to British GQ’s March issue, demonstrating on her palm. “Open up. More, more, ever so lightly … otherwise you’re going to be getting smooshy. Now … slow it down … just a little bit …”

The actress added that the intimate moments of lip locking on screen can be fun, especially when a person is single.

“If you’re both unattached and you get along, of course kissing in a movie is fun,” Hathaway said, though she’s filmed many of her own movie smooches while personally attached. (She’s currently dating actor Adam Shulman after a tumultuous long-term romance with convict ex Raffaello Follieri, who’s currently serving out a jail sentence on fraud charges.)

“But you can never get truly deep down and into it. Well, I can’t,” she continued.

One of her “Valentine’s Day” co-stars, she said, doesn’t have that problem.

“Jennifer Garner — now that girl can movie kiss. I gotta say that girl can really give it some up there,” Hathaway told the mag.

But the most impressive movie kisser of all? Hathaway said it’s none other than Angelina Jolie.

“Full-on movie kissing … it’s a totally different experience,” Hathaway said. “But really you have to be Angelina Jolie to pull that off and still look good. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I ain’t no Angie.”

Viewers will get the chance to judge for themselves when “Valentine’s Day” arrives in theaters on Feb. 12.

Anne Hathaway is headed for college.

I just got word that the Valentine’s Day and Alice In Wonderland star will be honored next month at Harvard University as Hasty Pudding’s Woman of the Year.

The legendary award is given to entertainers who have made a “lasting and impressive contribution to the world of entertainment,” the Hasty Pudding theater group website reads.

For those who don’t know, Hasty Pudding is no glitz and glamour red carpet event…

Hathaway will likely lead a parade through the streets surrounding the Ivy League school in Cambridge, Mass. What else they have planned is anybody’s guess. Last year, honoree Renée Zellweger was persuaded to put on a fat suit.

James Franco, who was 2009’s Man of the Year, was not only ambushed by the club’s signature drag queens during his roast, but he was made to milk a “gay cow” to mark his work in the movie Milk.

In addition to Zellweger, other A-listers who have been named Women of the Year include Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sandra Bullock.

No word on who will follow Franco as this year’s male honoree.

Hathaway’s rep did not comment.

Anna Hathaway was involved in a car accident today with a cyclist — but luckily for everyone involved, we’re told no one was seriously injured.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Hathaway was riding shotgun this afternoon in West Hollywood when the cyclist rammed into the car as it was turning onto Santa Monica Blvd.

The cyclist — who we’re told was at fault — refused medical treatment and was able to pink-pedal away from the “minor incident.”
